About Rick

Rick was born in Detroit, MI. At 16 years old Rick was invited to become the saxophonist with a local blues band and, after realizing people might actually pay him to have fun, Rick was determined to make a living playing music.

The first time Rick heard Dexter Gordon's tone on tenor he fell in love with the "old-school". rick alan hollywood mouthpieceHe spent the last years of high school studying jazz with renowned bebop saxophonist George Benson and the amazing John Wojciechowski who now lives in Chicago. He continued to be absorbed in the sound of Dexter and the tenor "old school", but also had his flings with the lyrical altoist Cannonball Adderly and funk godfather Maceo Parker.

By age 22 Rick had toured most of the USA performing along side legendary blues Alberta Adams and her all-star band led by R.J. Spangler. Age 23 brought extended tours and gigs with Dennis Edwards of the Temptations ("Papa Was A Rolling Stone"), Martha Reeves ("Dancing In The Street"), Sir Mack Rice ("Mustang Sally"), the Contours ("Do You Love Me?") and Doo-Wop artists The Tokens ("the Lion Sleeps Tonight"), The Reflections ("Just like Romeo & Juliet") and the Crystals ("Da Doo Ron Ron"). A New Years Eve gig with the O'Jays topped this period of his life off nicely.

Age 24 brought Rick to the seas aboard Norwegian Cruise Line, Holland America and Celebrity Cruises as a showband musician where he advanced his sight-reading, doubling and musical diversity. He performed on alto and tenor saxes, as well as flute and clarinet in small jazz groups, ballroom dance ensembles, musical theatre productions and behind featured artists (such as pianist "Hollywood" Pearl Kaufman).

After returning to land, Rick joined the most-working event band in Detroit, "The Sun Messengers", for three years of excellent Motown and funk. Along with performing in music clubs and private events, this band also had the honor of being the house band for Detroit's professional basketball team, "The Detroit Pistons" and they would entertain court-side at most of the home games.

By age 35 Rick had also added acoustic guitar to his bag of tricks.

By 33 years old Rick was living in Germany and playing in piano and guitar bars around Europe. Today he makes Bonn his home and continues to perform for a living.
